Adjustment to the first input: Howard Ferguson dit put in the score for clarinet or viola, which means he already gave the hint it could be played for viola as well. However still isn't clear who made the arrangement for the viola.

The 4 short pieces by Howard Ferguson were originally written for the clarinet, however they suite the viola very well! The arranger (not really clear who did it) choose a very lively attitude to the bowings, following the more folk way of playing than the breath of the clarinet. Especially in the second movement. The fourth movement, which is an octave lower as the clarinet, makes the tempo drop a bit, but as well it suites the instrument. I prefer however to take the original hight in this movement.
